About The Research Ethics Committee

The AIDS Support organization (TASO) is a non-governmental organization with a mission to contribute to the process of HIV prevention, restoring hope and improving the quality of life for individuals, families and communities affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. It provides care to over 120,000 PLHIV throughout the country.

TASO Research Ethics Committee (REC) was accredited by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) in August 2011 as an independent Institutional Research Board (IRB) (record UG-REC-009) to harness the benefits of research while protecting the rights and welfare of human research participants. UNCST is a semi-autonomous Government Agency established in 1990 by Act of Parliament (CAP 209) to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects.

TASO REC accreditation was renewed until April 26th, 2027. The REC is also certified with the Department of Health and Human Services under Federal Wide Assurance Certification: FW A00007922; IRB Number; IRB00011128 till April 7th, 2029

TASO has been involved in research partnership with investigators within and outside the country, organizations, higher institutions of learning and students. TASO REC reviews all types of research including observational research, behavioral research, clinical trials, social sciences research, health related research, academic and non- academic research.

Mission

To promote an environment that protects the welfare and rights of study participants and hold researchers accountable as they conduct research within accepted quality and ethical standards on behalf of UNCST and international IRBs.

Membership

Currently TASO-REC is comprised of 15 members, (13 regular members and two alternate members). The REC has two community representatives and a full time REC Administrator. The committee embraces various backgrounds in qualification, training and experience to achieve sufficient review of science and ethics in the stipulated protocols
